Friday, September 10

All cold stuff today, including a PB&J that got pretty messy. (Hey, it was 6 a.m!) Note to anyone who is thinking about buying one of these bento boxes. Order the cold packs from them. I didn't. I assumed a cold pack is a cold pack, but, as it turns out, not all cold packs are created equal. The ones I bought are way too big (even though they don't look big). Those puppies puffed up to the size of small pillows when they froze. You need the small ones that this company sells. And order when you order your bento box otherwise you'll have to pay for shipping again, and it will be more than the price of a couple of packs of freezable goop.

Today's lunch:

• PB&J on whole grain
• raw tofu sticks and stars
• carrot sticks, celery sticks (I thought of including peanut butter for dipping, but since the sandwich has peanut butter...)
• applesauce with a blueberry "E' (Later, on the train, I realized that this "E" will likely be a mess by the time E actually opens the box. Oh well.)
• a couple of yogurt-covered pretzels
• water
• morning snack: one of those Clif kid bars and a soymilk box

So E's school isn't nut-free?! No nut products allowed for Liam - and we live on PB for lunch. Can't even send in any snack food made in a factory that also uses nuts - even if that food has no nuts in it. I'm on board with keeping kids safe who have a severe allergy, but it's a challenge!

I wish I could have the energy to pack such diverse and wonderful lunches for Olivia. Can I pay you to pack lunches for her--and me? I give her 3 things and 1 is always fruit. Another involves protein. Sometimes brown rice or veggies are involved. But no Jello. (Now you know how "high" my standards are.) Keep up the good work! --Heidi

Hi Melissa. E's schools has a no-nuts policy for the classrooms (for morning snack, for the days when they have to eat lunch there, like they will tomorrow when the cafeteria is used for voting), but they have special tables in the cafeteria for the kids who have allergies. This makes it a LOT easier for parents. Maybe someone at your school could look into this? I assume E's school wouldn't allow it in the cafeteria if it wasn't working.

Hi Heidi! You sound like you're doing fine! And we'll see how long I last with being diverse. Sorry we missed your brunch yesterday, but probably a good thing I gave E a day to unwind.

Hello — with the raw tofu do you use extra firm? Does E dip the tofu or just eat as is? Great ideas. Thanks for sharing

MargaretL: Yeah, a comment (and question)! I tend to use firm tofu and it seems ok. He just eats it as is, but I've been thinking more about including dips. Any thoughts on what dip would be good for tofu? He likes mustard, so that would be easy to include, but I'd love ideas for dips that are more interesting. (The good thing is this lunch box system includes tiny dip containers with tops so it won't get all over the place.)
